A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
