In the 94th minute, sheer ecstasy erupted for Chelsea and interim manager Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández forced home a last-gasp equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola howling at the heavens and handed the temporary Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane could be billed as the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's pivotal intervention one to cherish the 40-year-old in his dotage.

A Glaring Contrast in Pedigree

On the City bench was the generation's pre-eminent figure, a man with an unparalleled CV for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a former coach at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had worked in City's own academy and stepped up to make his first-team debut after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a slew of absences, most notably Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed nearly insurmountable.

“Rollercoaster” was the adjective McFarlane used to sum up his experience since being thrust into the role.

Spirited Chelsea Frustrate City's Rhythm

The initial challenge at City's fortress is not to concede early, as a rout can swiftly follow. An early Trevoh Chalobah header clear from a corner indicated the visitors' goal was under pressure immediately, yet McFarlane's side proved spirited throughout the contest.

Another element of his blueprint was to disrupt at every turn. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea delayed at a dead ball, a sure sign the City's tempo was being disrupted and the Guardiola plan was being frustrated.

The battle grew ever more fractious, with Delap yellow-carded after a melee, and City's defensive pillars, Rúben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, both forced off injured. Despite late Chelsea pressure, a second goal seemed to be escaping them, with Cole Palmer unable to get a touch in front of goal.
