White House Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.

An analysis argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier said. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
